Carjacker steals NYPD detective's car in Manhattan

An NYPD detective reported that a carjacker stole his SUV Wednesday after he left it running with a female inside in Manhattan, police sources said.

The off-duty detective reported that he left his gray 2018 Hyundai SUV running in front of 340 Avenue of the Americas in Greenwich Village with the female in the front passenger seat at 3:20 p.m., the sources said.

A man described as being in his 20s and wearing a green jacket got into the driver’s seat, causing the female to promptly exit the vehicle, the sources said.

The carjacker didn’t make any statements or appear to have a weapon. He fled north on Sixth Avenue with the vehicle that had NY American Legion plates, the sources said.

The NYPD confirmed that the carjacking was being investigated.

“Lock the car doors,” a police source said. “It’s a different world than from a few months ago.”
